San Diego’s Unique USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum
San Diego is known for it’s world class zoo, Balboa Park, amusement parks, and water sports. But one of the best large attractions here has to be “hands down” the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.
USS Midway Museum is a “must visit” for people of all ages. It has over 60 exhibits located all over the vessel. Go at your own pace through self-guided audio tour. Kids can climb aboard aircraft and sit in cockpits, and do flight simulators.
The Midway served for nearly 50 years! Commissioned in 1945 and decommissioned in 1992, The Midway is the most popular naval warship museum in the United States. Well over a million visitors have climbed aboard. We have a good friend who served on the Midway during the Vietnam War era, and now spends his days as a docent aboard his ship. He is among many who served on the Midway and now are there to answer any questions you might have. You’ll get to tour the sleeping quarters, engine room, galley, bridge, brig, post office, officers quarters, primary flight control and more.
We have a sailboat charter business, Stars & Stripes USA-11 and “buzz” the Midway over 150 times a year! Our eleven-story mast barely towers above the flight deck as we pass her. Recently we had both Stars & Stripes and our other America’s Cup boat, IL Moro out. Both boats sailed past the Midway as a photographer captured the moment.
A lot of our guests tour the Midway during their stay here in San Diego. Sometimes they have friends/relatives up on the flight deck as we sail past. It’s always fun to wave and say hi to them as we sail by. San Diego has a lot to offer. Take it from a local, don’t miss touring the USS Midway Museum.

Great introduction to the vessel and its history. It’s worth the time to arrive early! Skilled crew always willing to chat about the boat, how it works, and anything else you can imagine. I still can’t wipe the smile off my face a day later. I totally recommend it!
The sail was super smooth and the captain and the crew were very knowledgeable and made sure to answer any questions and involve the passengers in any way possible. They even let us drive the boat for a little while! I highly recommend coming to stars and stripes if you haven’t been sailing before, because you won’t be disappointed!

As non-sailing mid-westerners, we sailed Stars & Stripes six years ago and enjoyed it so much that we committed to doing it again sometime with the kids. Mission accomplished! While visiting San Diego recently on spring break, we recently took our four kids (18,16,13,10) along and everyone had a blast.
I love that after six years the experience was still as genuine as the first time. In a time where everything seems to be overdone and impersonal, this group still delivers an activity where you’re as involved as you want to be and you matter! Step on board, help as you’re able, and relax… they even take the pictures! Pictures? Yes! They take the pictures and provide you a link to all of them… at no extra cost!
You know you’ve chosen the right thing to do when all of the tourists on the other boats are taking pictures of you on your boat! Sail USA-11 – you won’t regret it!

My husband’s birthday was such a special day because of Lynn, his wife and the entire crew of Stars and Stripes! The weather had threatened to be rainy but that did not stop us (the weather in San Diego is almost always great), and the sun came out, we caught a nice wind and we were off. What an experience to be on an America’s Cup boat! There is nothing like it. We all had the opportunity to take the helm and to “grind” if we wanted to. No pressure whatsoever but so much fun! Our entire family of five and a few others made for a group that was not too large to fit everyone comfortably. The scenery from the San Diego Bay was gorgeous and we sailed right under the Coronado Bridge. This was a fabulous trip and we would do it again in a heartbeat! Thank you so much Stars and Stripes.
