10 Best Sailing Charters for Your Next Visit to San Diego

Going sailing sounds super exciting… Right? Right! Well, as long as you go to the right places and, lucky for you, you do not need to do excessive research because I have done it all for you! Here are the top ten best sailing charters that sail San Diego waters/coastlines! Do keep in mind, after the first three, there is no longer an order of best to less great – and I will no longer apply review references.

  • Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11

The best sailing charter so far, at least to Tripadvisor and yelp reviews, would definitely have to be Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11. This charter has you cruising around San Diego Bay aboard the authentic 1851 America’s Cup racing boat/yacht.

This racing boat/yacht goes twice the speed of an average sailboat so hold on – you’re in for a wild ride!

There are both public and private charters so choose whichever you please – soft drinks, water, and light snacks will be provided completely free on either charter type. The crew member aboard the boat/ship will also be taking photos and videos to later be posted on Google Web Albums – again, entirely free! So, sit back and enjoy the ride.

And, to prove that it is a well-loved experience, these are some of the first few reviews left on Tripadvisor about Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11; “Fabulous sailing experience.” “Wow! What a wonderful experience!” “Joy and awe! Amazing day and a crew who loved being on the boat.”

  •  Classic Sailboat Sunset Sail

This sailing charter is one of the most calm boat/yacht experiences you could possibly find. Not only is there a beautiful sunset that you have the chance to watch, there is also wine, craft beer, and light snacks provided!

On the two-and-a-half-hour route you will pass landmarks like the USS Midway and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. You may just see some sea lions, dolphins, and other wildlife around the San Diego Harbor, too! You will have the chance to take some photographs if you want to wish to document your fun experience.

This is also an all-inclusive, small-group, cruise! So, whether you want to make it a date or a family get-together, it works!

The first couple reviews left on Tripadvisor were; “Excellent sailing!” and “Amazing! A sailing boat trip was on my bucket list and way exceeded my expectations.”

However, I did come across one negative review, “Owner did not provide pictures and enough information about the sailboat,” but the company quickly reacted and apologized profusely. Keep in mind, that is the only negative response I came across.

  •  San Diego Whale Watching Cruise

Love seeing wildlife? See a lot with this cruise!

You will be cruising on the ship America, sailing San Diego waters, spotting migrating whales and see dolphins skipping in the Pacific Ocean. As you are watching the wildlife, your expert guide will share informative and interesting commentary about grey whales, dolphins, and whatever else you may see.

And, a bonus, the boat/yacht that you will be aboard is a replica of the historic, 1851, first America’s Cup sailboat!

You will be provided light snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, but if you wish, you can bring your favorite bottle of wine to sip onboard.

I think the first couple Tripadvisor reviews sum up the experience quite well; “The tour was lovely.” “No whales but still lots of fun… We did see a HUGE pod of dolphins.”

  • Gone Sailing Charters

These charters are actually more towards those wanting to have a party or celebration while onboard.

They specialize in setting up romantic dates, proposal settings, wedding receptions, graduation parties, birthday parties, anniversaries, and the list goes on.

Similar to Sail San Diego, they also have private and public charters offered openly.

  • San Diego Sunset Sail

With this charter you will end up on a very comfortable, cozy, yacht and cruise along, sailing San Diego’s coastline. You will have the ability to take in views of scenic waterfronts, military vessels, and historical landmarks.

And, if you pay close enough attention to the water, you may just see some marine wildlife! Make sure to take some pictures!

This tour is specifically for small groups, up to six people, and is usually taken by couples that want to enjoy a glass of champagne (included) on the water.

  •  Sail Away San Diego

For these charters, all are private, no exceptions. Some options would be Proposal Cruise, Sunset Cruise, Dinner Cruise, Day Sail, Wedding Cruise, and the list goes on.

You will be provided champagne, no matter which cruise you decide on, and non-alcoholic drinks will also be available.

Sail Away San Diego is a family owned and operated business, so they like to make each of their trips feel as comfortable and easy as possible.

  •  Cast Off Sailing

This charter gives you private and public charters, again, similar to Stars & Stripes USA-11. Sadly, they do not have boats/yachts large enough for a group quantity over ten.

When setting sail, you can watch the sunset, go out on the water for an entire day, or do seasonal whale watching!

Cast Off Sailing encourages their guests to take control and sail the vessel, but you do not have to. If you would like, you may sip on some wine.

  • Imagine Sailing San Diego

Imagine Sailing San Diego gives you options to pass by Bayfront Water’s Edge at San Diego and experience the Downtown Skyline from aboard your sailboat. You can also pass by San Diego Bay and Coastal Waters – this option only allows six people onboard.

Either way, you will be on a private boat/yacht, sailing San Diego’s coastlines.

Please know that this is not wheelchair accessible, infants must sit on laps, and it is not recommended for travelers with back problems – or any serious health condition, for that matter.

Snacks and bottled water are included, you can bring your own alcoholic beverages if you wish.

  •  Lucky Sol Sailing

Lucky Sol Sailing is available for groups up to six people. The most popular tour given by them is the San Diego Bay Tour.

You will pass all of the landmarks that the Bay has to offer including the USS Midway, Star of India & Maritime Museum, Coronado Bridge, NAS North Island, and so on.

You will see shore birds and if you are lucky, sea lions and maybe even a dolphin or two. You will be provided water and light snacks – feel free to bring your own, too!

  • San Diego Dinner Dance Cruise

This charter offers a three-hour cruise along with a three-course dinner (with choice of entree). You can also purchase cocktails and wine. Beverages included would be water, champagne, or sparkling cider!

Something different about this compared to the others on the list… There is an onboard DJ! So, dance the night away.

Another note, there is sadly a dress code of business casual, so you will have to put your blue jeans away.

Have fun sailing!

The majority of sailing tours and sailing charters in san diego are run on older sialboats and geared towards partying or booze cruises.  This is NOT our type of sailing charter. The Stars & Stripes USA-11 is an authentic racing yacht that was designed by David Pedrick and Bruce Nelson and built by Eric Goetz in Rhode Island, Stars & Stripes, USA-11 was Dennis Conner’s first IACC boat.

The main factor separating Stars & Stripes USA-11 from the rest of the sailing charters around san diego bay; this is the only interactive sailing charter on a world famous racing yacht.  Stars & Stripes is also the fastest sailing charter in San Diego, and as we know; all of California. Being an interactive sailing tour; the guest will be able to take the helm (drive the sailboat), grind the winches, and help raise and lower the sails. It also fine, to just hangout and enjoy the luxurious ride thru beautiful San Diego Bay. The skipper’s wife Bee, will also help out with taking pictures, recording videos, and narrating San Diego’s most iconic ships and sites along the way. This will all be included with the price of your tickets.

If you our your group is looking for a more private charter, the Stars & Stripes also offers private sailing charters, private group charters, along with its infamous team-building activity where your team or group will be able to take part in 3 different races; zig zagging thru San Diego Bay.

Stars and Stripes USA-11 is no pleasure craft. Unless, of course, you find pleasure—and probably some exhilaration, too—from winding winches and steering the yacht that took a stab at the 1992 America’s Cup. Groups up to 24 can take turns helming the ship (or just hanging out) on three-hour tours of San Diego Bay, her home since 2006, with free pictures of you looking like a total pro provided by the Stars and Stripes team.” source:

A FEW OF OUR SAN DIEGO SAILING TOUR REVIEWS

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.17″]

Had a great sail on 8/4. The crew was knowledgeable and friendly. Loved the ability to see San Diego from the bay on a racing yacht. My kids also enjoyed being able to sail and grind. I highly recommend this experience!

Thanks for our comments and it was a pleasure having your family aboard Stars & Stripes.

Took my girlfriend onto the Stars and Stripes as we were looking for fun things to do in San Diego, and we had the most enjoyable time and got to take part of crew duties. The most surprising thing about the sailing tour we took was how fast the Stars N Stripes America’s Cup boat went. We got up to 14 knots and could not believe what a rush it was. We also, got to drive the sailboat while the others were working the winches and tightening the lines. We highly recommend you take a tripe on the Stars N Stripes USA 11 the next time you are in San Diego!

Thanks so much for the positive review. We are finding that a lot of the local residents have discovered us! They too were looking for fun things to do in San Diego and have said they not only enjoyed the tour of San Diego by sailboat, but were amazed that we go twice as fast what a regular sailboat can do. Glad you and your girlfriend had a great time!

Thanks for rating your experience aboard Stars & Stripes with five stars.

Incredible day sure to be long remembered. The entire staff was fantastic – energetic, engaged, helpful. They seemed to have as much fun as the guest. If you are considering a sailboat tour of any nature, do yourself a favor and consider this one first!

Thanks for your comments and it was a pleasure having fellow Texans on board.

Had a great experience – crew was awesome – sailing was amazing and it was fun to drive and work the boat and sails – the scenery was terrific- it was very safe and I’d highly recommend to anyone visiting San Diego A great way to see the bay and all the sights while being actively engaged in the sailing

Thanks for the thorough review and we’re happy to hear you enjoyed our America’s Cup experience.

Thanks for your comprehensive review of our America’s Cup experience.

This was an awesome few hours on the water in San Diego. From start to finish a great experience. The booking process was simple and efficient. We sailed the inner bay for tacking and jibing practice and from these exercises it was clear that we were in the hands of experts who, in a very low key way, integrated safety with an amazing sailing experience. From the bay we were able to head out for a little open water sailing…just enough to shake out the cobwebs and show the power of Stars & Stripes. Everyone got to “drive” and grind the winches and the crew encouraged and welcomed participation from all on board. Thanks Captain Glen and Crew for the opportunity to sail on board Stars & Stripes!

Thanks for your thorough review of our America’s Cup experience.

What could be better than a day on the water? How about sailing on an America’s Cup Yacht! Everyone was given the opportunity to try the different positions; from raising the sails to helmsman! It was an absolutely fabulous experience meeting people from around the world on this incredible racing machine.

Thanks for your comprehensive review of our America’s Cup experience.

San Diego, California Sailing Charters

Yesterday, Three Gray Whales were spotted cruising around in San Diego Bay, California

San Diego Bay is a natural harbor and deep-water port. The bay, which is 12 miles long and 1 to 3 miles wide, is the third largest of the three large, protected natural bays on California’s entire 840 miles long coastline after San Francisco Bay and Humboldt Bay. Overlooking San Diego Bay, on the waters edge, is the beautiful city of San Diego (eighth largest city in the United States). Numerous marinas, yacht clubs, and sixteen public parks are also along the bay waters perimeter. Unlike colder and drizzly San Francisco Bay and Humboldt Bay, San Diego Bay’s average high temperature ranges between 66 and 76 degrees.

Rainy days on San Diego Bay are a mere 24 days per year average! During summer months the breezes blow about 10 knots on a regular basis in the afternoons. San Diego Bay has perfect weather and conditions for sailing!

Speaking of sailing, San Diego Bay is the weekend getaway for many that live in nearby Los Angeles and Orange Counties. San Diego Bay is so big that you could go sailing all day and never get bored with its diverse and beautiful scenery. Obviously, sailing on San Diego Bay is one of the top things to do when you visit San Diego. One of my favorite things to do when sailing on the bay is zipping past the huge aircraft carrier, the Midway. The Midway is now a museum, and another must do while in San Diego.

San Diego hosted the 1988, 1992 and 1995 America’s Cup. Dennis Conner, a native of San Diego, had brought the coveted cup to San Diego. The America’s Cup racing dates back to 1851 when a yacht named America won a giveaway trophy in a race around the Isle of Wight, England. The trophy cup was later engraved, “The Yacht America” and thus became known as America’s Cup. The prestigious America’s Cup race draws top notch teams from all over the world.

If you would like to actually sail on an America’s Cup boat, two retired 1992 boats are available for charter. Public and private charters are offered aboard Stars & Stripes USA 11 and IL Moro Di Venezia ITA 16. Simply go to the website sailusa11.com, select “availability” to view a calendar.

Corporate team building and private sails can include the two boats racing against each other!
Other exciting sailing races have happened recently right on San Diego Bay. Stadium seating was set up on the bay In November 2011, when San Diego hosted the action packed America’s Cup World Series. Those races led up to the 2013 America’s Cup races. Eleven teams from all over the world competed aboard 45 foot foiling catamarans. More recently, San Diego hosted the Extreme Sailing Series. In 2017 and 2018, foiling GC 32’s represented with teams from around the globe competed in very exciting races on San Diego Bay while spectators ashore watched the action.

Don’t miss out on unique things to do while in San Diego. Try being like a local, and look for unusual things to do during your next visit to San Diego. My favorite activity to do in San Diego is sailing aboard the 78 foot long Stars & Stripes USA 11. sailusa11.com It’s a most unusual way to see the sights on San Diego Bay !

My husband and I went on the tour the day after our wedding with some of our family. The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too chilly. The crew was very friendly and informative. It didn’t seem like you were out there for 3 hours… because it was so fun. I think we could have spent all day our there it was so cool. You would think you would get sea sick but not all. Just be prepared for when the boat switches directions and you find yourself either on the high side or the low side of the boat. The crew made everyone feel a part of the experience by including them in the navigation of the boat. Even if you live in San Diego, you should make the trip. It is a very different view of downtown. I have lived here for several years and gone down to the uss midway, seaport village, etc… but it is so cool to be out on a sail boat and have everyone wave as you go by.

One of the best things to do in San Diego! Sail the best, with the best! These guys know their stuff and it shows. I took an out of town friend who is not easily impressed or excited….he still talks about how cool this was.

thanks for a great day out!

After almost signing up for the “lessor” tour that was half the price and half the time….also would have been half the ship, I’m THRILLED that I chose SailUSA11.

A beautiful day for sailing on July 2, 2011. There were only 3 other “tourists” on-board and we all got a nice long time in sailing the boat. We also could be as involved as we chose to be. All of us assisted in raising the main sail, which is just about 11 stories tall and man, hard work.

Great people, very knowledgable and willing to answer every question you might have.

Thanks for a great afternoon!

We have spent several memorable vacations in the San Diego area, but sailing on Stars & Stripes/USA 11 was the most unforgettable Independence Day experience we’ve had. Captain Lynn and his volunteer crew were welcoming and their cordial charm was unforced; they were clearly glad to be sailing on the beautiful bay on a beautiful vessel. I don’t remember ever feeling so relaxed and joyful at the same time, and the three hours absolutely flew by. Having seen and done so many wonderful things in San Diego, the Stars & Stripes is at the top of the not-to-be-missed list.

Sailing on USA-11 is a dream come true for anyone with any interest in sailing, even if you’ve never done it before. Sit back and relax or get in on the action. You’ll have a blast being the center of attention for the entire bay as you silently pass all the other sailboats.

I found this on Trip Advisor and it stuck out as something different. I love sailing and the water, but this was a truly unique experience sailing on an America’s Cup yacht. My wife and kids are not sailors nor fond of the water and this was the highlight of their trip. Can’t say enough about the friendly and informative crew. They were great. HIGHLY recommended.

This is what bucket list’s are made of. Sailing at it’s finest on a perfect sunny day with just the right amount of wind in San Diego Bay. Beautifully maintained sailboat by a professional and personal crew. They even let me sail It !

I decided to take the splurge after reading all the great reviews. I thought if the trip could be half as great as all the reviews it would be worth it, was I wrong. It was better than all the reviews. and more than we could have imagined. I am 51 and had never sailed before and neither had any of my children, ages 25,23,and 19.
We ALL and I mean ALL could not stop smiling and saying this will be a day that will always be remembered. The boat is super clean, the staff treat you like royalty. The views, the snacks, drinks, and the trivia history on everything we saw was beyond top notch. I also need to add that I sent the captain an email at 10:00pm asking if by chance he had an opening for the next day. I told him to call asap so we could make other plans. Much to my surprise he called me within 10 minutes and said he wasn’t planning on going out tom. I understood and he asked if we could go the following day. Unfortunately I told him we were leaving and could not. He told me to give him some time to see if he could round up a crew. 15 minutes later he called and said we were own for one the next day. A couple of minutes later I was reading a detail emailed with directions etc. This boat is huge and takes at least 7 to operate. The crew went out of their way to explain everything and we all had fun helping. The crew are all professionals that LOVE sailing. My youngest boy,19, told the captain anytime (early or not) he needed an extra gopher or scrubber to call him and he would do just about anything for a chance to ride again. He lives in Pacific Beach. Again this is a teenager willing to wake up early and work for free, scrubbing decks, just for a chance to sail again-this should say it all.
This is one thing you need to do. I am a public school teacher and have a tight budget and this was splurge, hence the 10 pm email .I had spent three hours reading every review I could find on the boat. It was worth 3x the price and the many memories are priceless. Just do it! We bounded together as a family. This is great for people of all ages. Don’t worry about getting seasick it is so smooth sailing. The only thing that would have made it better was being able to stay and do it again.

I had a great time on the Stars and Stripes USA-11. The sail was very relaxing, even when we were going 11knots. We saw the beautiful city of San Diego and sailed under the Coronado Bridge. We all had a chance at the helm and the skipper was very patient with us. After the three hour sail we watched pics and videos of the trip with a drink in hand and smiles on our faces. Thank you Lynn and crew!!!

I just had the most extraordinary sailing experience among Stars & Stripes USA11 for Memorial Day Weekend ’11. Lynn Hanna, Captain, is such a kind, sweet gentleman who let everyone practice in helming the boat & a native of Bastrop, TX! If you’re wanting to learn sailing & actually help out the crew, than this is the experience for you! The crew that I met, Marnie & Mario were absolutely polite & courteous & happy to have you on board! As a beginner sailor, this experience has taught me simple sailing basics & techniques. If you’re used to driving w/the tiller like me, this would be great for you because Lynn will let you practice on steering the helm & preparing to tack when changing your course of direction! I have a passion for the water, and this experience exceeded all my expectations & more. Thank all of you guys among Stars & Stripes USA11 for the highlight of my first San Diego trip!!

Should You Charter a Racing Sailboat or Charter a Cruising Sailboat?

[et_pb_section bb_built=”1″][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.17.6″]

Sailing is about being on the water, the freedom, fresh air, and being with friends or family.  Sailing is also about finding the type of sailboat that will best suit you.

Boats that are larger than 26 feet usually have standing headroom down below and are typically equipped with sleeping accomodations, a head (bathroom) and galley are Cruising Sailboats. Cruising Sailboats should have sufficient internal volume for comfortable living aboard.

Racing Sailboats: When you put the words sailing and racing together so many images come to mind as it can mean something different to every person on the water. Why do we sail? Is it the love of the sport or the competitive side of the sport? Do you enjoy the physical or mental side of competing? Any yacht can ultimately be raced, but there are many that are designed, rigged and built specifically for competitive racing.

Racing Sailboats are similar to cruising boats but have more equipment and are built lighter, with spartan to no accommodations. Such boats are usually 20 – 70+ feet in length.

America’s Cup yachts are Racing Sailboats that run into the millions of dollars to build and many thousands to operate and maintain annually. Skippered by the best, crewed by professionals, these yachts are the top dogs of the sailing world. Very few locations throughout the world offer opportunities to actually sail on a retired America’s Cup Sailboat.  Of those, very few venues actually allow guests to grind winches and drive the America’s Cup Racing Sailboat. One such yacht is Stars & Stripes USA 11.

Located in beautiful San Diego California, Stars & Stripes USA 11 is available for Private Charter, Corporate Charter, Team Building Charter, or one can join others onboard a Public Charter. Stars & Stripes USA 11 is 78’ long, 17’ wide, 13’ deep and eleven stories high! Towering 115’ off the water, Stars & Stripes USA 11 is the grand lady of San Diego Bay that makes a statement something like: “I’m bold and beautiful, and I’m likely to beat the competition while providing a comfortable ride for my guests”.

Like all sailboats, Stars & Stripes USA 11 can carry you through the water and across space and time using nothing but the power of the wind. Unlike most other sailboats, though, Stars & Stripes USA 11 has a length on waterline of 65’ making comfortable motion underway —thereby making your ride supremely quiet and smooth. In twelve years of guests sailing aboard the Racing Sailboat Stars & Stripes USA 11, no one has ever gotten seasick.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video _builder_version=”3.17.6″ src=”https://vimeo.com/295065193″ image_src=”//i.vimeocdn.com/video/732123807_960.jpg” play_icon_color=”#e09900″ /][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.17.6″]

Once underway, you will have an opportunity to grind the winches (to bring in the sails), drive the boat and feel its power, or relax and enjoy the ride. Stars & Stripes USA 11 will zip around San Diego Bay at twice the speed of other sailboats.  If the wind is up, the ride can be quit thrilling.

If you choose to charter Stars & Stripes USA 11 for Team Building, your group can be broken down in small groups that would rotate through different stations and actively work together in racing mode. Or your Team Building adventure could be one that is down time for your team members to relax and spend time together. Detailed Team Building info here.

Corporate Charters on Stars & Stripes USA 11 is a great way to entertain clients or incorporate the racing sailboat experience for a board of directors retreat. Click for more info…

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide, cruising style sailboat or Racing Sailboat. I choose Racing Sailboat because if I don’t feel like grinding winches, I can always relax and enjoy the freedom, fresh air and being with friends or family while zipping along enjoying the power and performance of the yacht.

Famous San Diego Boat Tour

[et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.48″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.12.1″]

The Stars and Stripes-USA11 is a famous San Diego Boat Tour; conveniently located 2 miles from downtown San Diego, just across from the airport on shelter island drive. The small privately held company in San Diego, California which specializes in public and private personalized yacht charter for small groups was started back in 2011. “This is not something you can do just anywhere,” says Lynn Hanna, captain of the vessel, which is called Stars and Stripes.

In fact, it’s the only place in North America where you can charter this type of boat, defined by its 11-story mast and speeds of up to 12 knots per hour. “We’re basically going twice as fast as the other boats,” says Hanna. “The keel goes down 13 feet and weighs 40,000 lbs., acting as a counterbalance to the mast.”

Stars and Stripes is not your typical San Diego Boat Tour; it is a premier yacht charter company in San Diego, CA. That encourages participants to raise the sails, grind the winches and even take the helm. We consider this an interactive experience combined with a 30 minute presentation of the history of San Diego Bay prior to the Sailing Charter. After the sail, complimentary refreshments are served while viewing the days activities on our flat screen TV.

The infamous Stars and Stripes and its sister vessel ILL Moro can also be retained for corporate team building, private events, racing against team-members or co-workers or birthday parties. The Captain does point out that this is NOT a booze cruise as the boat is designed to sail hard for three hours max, not nearly enough time to bring on beer scurvy.

Be sure to arrive 30 minutes before the sail and take advantage of the history of the American Cup. You can tell that the Crew that works on the sail boat LOVES what they do. We took both our teenage sons (13 &16) they had a blast and you know how hard it is to please a teenager. They were able to grind the sails and captain the boat. Another perk included on this tour was they took ALL the photos and emailed them to you the next day. This allowed us to sit back and enjoy. I will defiantly be back to sail on this boat next summer. Thank you to the Crew for providing my family with a day we will never forget!

This is the best adventure experience in San Diego. Well worth your time. San Diego, the home of Dennis Conner and port of call for two America’s Cup races, has this amazing boatfrom the 1992 campaign. The boat is big, impressive, and staffed with first class sailors. The bay tour is extensive and a lot of fun.

We reserved some time with the Stars and Stripes crew for a sailing tour of the San Diego bay. It’s hard to find activities that can accomidate a large group (17 people) but this was perfect! Everyone got the chance to steer the boat and crank in the lines. The boat was really impressive and felt spacious and safe for those who were timid of the water. The crew was fantastic- funny and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend for a sunny day!

This experience far surpassed my expectations and they were pretty high! Took my husband as a special treat as he is a sailor on the East Coast. We wanted something different than his usual experience in a J-22 sailboat and the opportunity to sail in an America’s Cup Yacht was too hard to pass up. The entire tour is well organized and run from beginning to end thanks to owners Lynn and Bee who are so personable and accommodating. Is it more expensive than those other tours – yes. Is it worth twice the cost – yes. This is why – it’s much more than a sail -it’s an educational hands-on experience on a historic yacht!! Arrive 30 minutes early and owner Bee gives you an amazing presentation on the history of the America’s Cup and Dennis Conner’s background in San Diego and major contribution to the sport. She is a wealth of knowledge and her presentation was interesting for even “non sailors” like myself. Once you are underway on the boat – which is super spacious and comfortable – each person interested was allowed a turn at the wheel and other sailing tasks as often as they wished. Tour itself on water was about 2.5 hrs. and you had a fabulous view of gorgeous San Diego downtown, Coronado and Point Loma to enjoy from the water. Another bonus was that Bee took hundreds of photos of all of us while onboard and sent us a link – FREE!! – immediately after the tour. I would say this is appropriate for ages 7-80? You need to be comfortable getting onto a large sailboat and the movement it involves. Our group was age range 40-75? When we got back we had an impromptu cocktail hour in the office area while enjoying the recent photo show of us all! Lynn and Bee – great job and thanks for a wonderful day on the water and lifetime memory:)

My family and I had a STUNning afternoon out on the water on the Stars & Stripes and with their amazing crew. We learned so much from our tour guide, Bee, and the crew took excellent care of us. My kids were thrilled getting to “drive” the boat. I would recommend this excursion to anyone coming to the area and the locals! I have never been treated so well on a tour PLUS they take tons of pictures and you can download them for free. That is usually unheard of! So go…go now… May there be wind in your sails, and wine in your glass.

If you are going to charter a sail boat in San Diego, why not get one of the original America’s Cup boats, “Stars and Stripes 11”. Thanks to some fine folks from Texas who have bought the boat and set it up as a charter you can do just that. This boat is sailing history and designed for pure performance. Its crew of 6-7 will let you participate in the process so its not a tour for couch potatoes, though my 83 year old dad and 76 year old mom managed it just fine. Incredible staff, crew, boat and experience. Added bonus, one of the crew doubles as a photographer and makes all the photos he takes available free after the sail, unlike most places that will try to sell you pics. Double bonus: a toast when your sail is over and cocktail reception back in the office.

From start to finish, this was an informative and fun sail. My husband, daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation prior to the sail and the sail, oh my! We had packed in a lot of activities in the week we visited, but this outranked them all. The weather was perfect and the boat was fast. It was fun to take the helm and my husband had a blast being a main grinder. The captain, first mate and crew were personable and knowledgeable about the boat. I highly recommend this tour.

The Best .period. Exclamtion Ponts !!!!!

Truly awesome, a very enjoyable adventure & tour. Everybody gets to help crew the boat as much as they want, or not at all. The ride is a forever experience, The crew was as much a tour guide as a sailing tutor, no matter what your degree of knowledge was of either. Way more fun than some “sit on your hands harbor tour“. Have already recommended this to friends and family, and would love to do this again on my return to San Diego. Thanks USA-11

My 16 year old daughter and I couldn’t convince my wife to go along on this great sailing trip, so just the two of us went. For the two of us it cost $182 and we were out for the better part of 4 hours, my 16 year old was half price.

Although we had a little difficulty finding the office near the Kona Kai Conference center, we did park in the Marina lot and USA 11 validated it for us -so parking for Free. The office is in a one story strip building east of the conference center.

They had a short America’s cup history presentation before the sailing that we just caught the tail end of.

The sailing was great with about 15 other people on board. We all got to grind the winches – raising and trimming sails, and steer the boat. We also got a little tour guiding from the crew as we sailed around San Diego Bay. It was fun sailing up to and around the large Navy ships including aircraft carriers and dodging ships returning to port. I think we got up to 12.8 knots several times during the afternoon, great fun.

You don’t need to bring a lot of gear (cameras, binoculars, and etc.). These all get stowed below deck anyway and the crew took hundreds of pictures that were available to all the next day on Google photos. I’ll try to attach some to this review.

They also had nuts, pretzels, and water / soft drinks throughout the trip. Towards the end they broke out some beer and wine for some of us.
